4. All About h2g2 / The World of h2g2 / The Countryside

The H2G2 Cycling Club

In celebration of the greatest invention in history, according to BBC Radio 4's Today programme: the bicycle!

Greetings, Unknown Visitor, and welcome to the clubhouse. Prop your bike up in the corner where a team of highly dedicated cycle fairies will polish and oil it (using only the highest quality Finish Line lubes), pull up a comfy chair and help yourself to a banana.

Footnote: I am very busy in RL at present and in any case spend more time on Usenet than here, so if anyone wants to take over this particular bit of the world, feel free.

Purpose of the Club

The purpose of the H2G2 cycling club is to meet and share information. If other hikers want to know bike-related things and don't posess a copy of Richard's Bicycle Book, they are welcome to trundle over here and ask. I'll also happily link any cycling-related entries here.

To this end I'm working up what I hope will become a collaborative entry on cycling. This should link to the articles on bicycle gearing, mountain bikes, touring bikes and so on. I hope.

Membership, rules, all that jazz

Membership is free, all welcome, from the occasional trundler to the True Cyclist®. Members of the Cyclists' Touring Club and League of American Wheelmen 1 are especially welcome, if only because it makes me feel less isolated to know that there are others out there who share my hobby.

Cycling on H2G2

Entries are linked in alphabetical order, unless I cocked it up (in which case they will be when I fix it). I am scavenging the guide as I get spare minutes.

Edited Guide
Bicycle GearingAn entry by Ausnahmsweise which set me off on the whole bike-related entry thing, so has a lot to answer for.
Bicycle User Groups (BUGs)Ravenbait's entry on bike user groups and how to make one happen at a workplace near you.
British Touring BicyclesOne of mine
Cycle Clothingan entry in which Iinexplicably miss one essential item: gloves.
Eddy MercxAwesome cyclist, the name on some fine bicycles, and a trump card in any game of Famous Belgians.
How to fix a bicycle flat tyrePractical guidance for the pneumatically challenged from jgr. Get Kevlar-belted tyres and read this entry less often!
Off-Road Bicyclesby Dudemeister, who is U53464 - I am U54363. I never noticed that before!
The New Forest, HampshireFavourite haunt of cyclists in the Southern UK, by the ever prolific Peregrin. Viva el presidente!

CyclingAnother imaginitvely titled entry, this one from Waz from Wayne's World
Cyclists, and why I hate themBy the misguided Kandyman - don't flame him, it'll only make him worse.
dangerous cycling path in berlinA useful heads up from researcher 138284, whose continued absence is not, we hope, related in any way to the subject matter of this entry.
Ron KitchingAn incomplete homage to "Mr Cycling" who died last year.
Suffolk CyclingA brief entry by Researcher 138730, who appears to have left the building (presumably to cycle round Suffolk)
SustransThe sustainable transport organisation, by s00z
The Future Is Laid BackComments on recumbency by Recumbentman

1 OK, OK, it's bicyclists now - but wheelmen conjures up the wonderful image of high-wheelers
